Closure of Bata Factory Signals Government Failure to Stem Influx of Textile Imports

Chairman of the Indonesian Fiber and Filament Yarn Producers Association (APSyFI), Redma Gita Wirawasta, has revealed that the closure of the Bata shoe factory in Purwakarta, West Java, is attributed to the government’s failure in providing a market for domestic products.

“This is indeed a failure on the part of the government to provide a market for domestic products,” said Redma when contacted on Thursday (9/5).

According to Redma, such incidents are recurring in the textile and textile product (TPT) industry, which is currently inundated with foreign products.

“The occurrence of factory closures is similar to what’s happening in the TPT industry, where the domestic market is flooded with imported products,” he explained.

Furthermore, Redma criticized the government for failing to curb the influx of imported TPT products, leading to numerous manufacturing industries laying off workers or even shutting down their operations.

“It seems that our government is powerless in containing these imported goods,” he concluded.

It is worth noting that the closure of the Bata shoe factory in Purwakarta resulted in the termination of employment for over 200 workers employed there.
