Westminster, California – In a moment of reflection and celebration during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Los Angeles was formally presented with the AAPI Achievement Award, recognizing Indonesia’s historic humanitarian role in aiding Vietnamese refugees during their time on Galang Island.
The ceremony, held on May 17, 2025, served as a significant milestone not only in cross-cultural remembrance but also in honoring the timeless values of compassion and regional solidarity. Initiated by Little Saigon TV, the event was graced by community leaders, including Westminster Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen and San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran.
Indonesia’s role in the resettlement efforts of thousands of refugees from Vietnam in the late 20th century has been a cornerstone of the country’s humanitarian diplomacy. The Galang Island refugee camp became a sanctuary during a critical period of Southeast Asian history, and the legacy of that generosity continues to resonate.
In his remarks, the Consul General expressed deep gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to upholding humanitarian values in global affairs. “This award is a symbol of shared history and mutual respect,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of building stronger ties not only through cultural exchange and tourism, but also through economic collaboration among Asia-Pacific communities in the United States.
The event also featured captivating cultural performances representing the diverse heritage of AAPI communities, including traditional dances and music from Indonesia, China, Korea, India, Thailand, and Vietnam—highlighting the unity that underpins diversity.
Established by the U.S. Congress in 1992, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month serves as a national tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history and continue to be vital contributors to its future. Through this award, Indonesia’s humanitarian past was honored as part of that collective legacy.
