Bangkok, Thailand – In a glittering reception hosted by the Italian Embassy, Italy conferred two of its highest national honours on Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul and Dr Somsak Leeswadtrakul, celebrating their profound contributions to international relations, philanthropy, and cultural diplomacy. The evening brought together ambassadors, dignitaries, business leaders, and members of high society in recognition of the couple’s enduring legacy of service and leadership.
Khunying Patama, a distinguished leader in international sport and culture, received the Commendatore dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana (Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic – OMRI). The honour reflects her wide-ranging influence as a member of the International Olympic Committee, President of the Badminton World Federation, and champion of cultural and philanthropic causes in Thailand and beyond. Her steadfast support was also noted as pivotal in Italy’s successful bid for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
Her husband, Dr Somsak Leeswadtrakul, an industrial magnate and philanthropist, was awarded the Commendatore dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia (Commander of the Order of the Star of Italy – OSI). Recognised for his leadership in building one of Southeast Asia’s most formidable steel enterprises and his pivotal role in fostering Italian business interests in Thailand, Dr Somsak’s quiet yet impactful philanthropic work across communities was praised as a model of global stewardship.
Italian Ambassador Paolo Dionisi, who presided over the ceremony, lauded both honourees as symbols of excellence and cross-cultural connection. “Your vision and achievements have strengthened the enduring ties between our nations,” he said, underscoring their commitment to sport, culture, and international cooperation. Guests included senior diplomats, such as the ambassadors of the United States, Japan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea, who joined in celebrating the couple’s recognition.
In her acceptance remarks, Khunying Patama expressed gratitude on behalf of herself and her husband. “We are profoundly humbled and grateful for these prestigious honours,” she said, pledging to further strengthen Italy–Thailand relations. She also highlighted her lifelong passion for sport as a bridge for peace and mutual understanding, while affirming her continued commitment to the Milano Cortina 2026 initiatives.
Dr Somsak’s contribution to industrial growth and community philanthropy was equally emphasised during the evening, with the ambassador praising his role as “a real steel magnate whose vision and generosity have advanced both economic and social progress.” His support of interfaith initiatives was highlighted as a reflection of his broad humanitarian vision.
The reception concluded with warm applause and congratulatory tributes from regional leaders and industry pioneers. For many in attendance, the ceremony was more than a diplomatic occasion – it was a celebration of values, vision, and the enduring power of individuals to strengthen bonds between nations.
As Italy honoured two of Thailand’s most respected figures, the evening in Bangkok stood as a symbol of friendship, recognition, and the global reach of leadership grounded in service.
