Otto Toto Sugiri Builds $7 Billion Fortune Without Mining, Malls, or Banks

July 24, 2025

Jakarta – In a nation where many billionaires trace their wealth to mining, banking, or retail empires, Otto Toto Sugiri stands apart. The Indonesian tech entrepreneur and digital infrastructure pioneer has built an estimated fortune of USD 7 billion (approximately IDR 113 trillion), all without ever owning a mine, mall, or bank.

Born in Bandung on September 23, 1953, Otto earned his master’s degree in computer engineering from RWTH Aachen University in Germany. His career began as an IT General Manager at Bank Bali, where he and his team developed one of the country’s first banking software systems, ushering in a new era of digital banking in Indonesia.

In 1989, Otto founded PT Sigma Cipta Caraka, a company that provided software solutions for a rapidly deregulating Indonesian banking industry. With the 1990s surge in new banks, Sigma became instrumental in powering their digital transformation. By 2010, the company was acquired by state-owned Telkom Indonesia and rebranded as Telkomsigma.

While many would have considered retirement after the sale, Otto saw a new opportunity in the rising demand for data infrastructure. In 2011, he founded PT DCI Indonesia Tbk, which has since become a national leader in data center services. Under his leadership as President Director since 2016, DCI earned the prestigious Tier IV certification, ensuring 99.995% service uptime — a global gold standard.

Otto’s business footprint extends beyond DCI. He is also the President Commissioner of PT IndoInternet Tbk (EDGE), Indonesia’s first integrated internet service provider, and is actively involved in other tech ventures such as Fortress Data Services and several startups in marketplace and agritech spaces.

Despite early roots in banking tech, Otto’s fortune has grown entirely from his commitment to software development and digital infrastructure. According to Bloomberg and Forbes Real Time Billionaires data from July 2025, Otto has surged to become the sixth-richest person in Indonesia.

This dramatic increase in wealth was driven by DCI’s outstanding performance. In Q1 2025 alone, the company reported a net profit of IDR 418.84 billion — a 194% increase from the previous year — with total revenue reaching IDR 1.81 trillion for 2024.

Widely regarded as a visionary, Otto has played a crucial role in building Indonesia’s digital backbone. He not only pioneered critical tech infrastructure but also championed the development of local talent, fostering a new generation of tech leaders.

His journey is a testament to how technological innovation, when aligned with national needs, can generate immense economic value. Otto’s story proves that wealth in the digital age no longer needs to rely on traditional assets — but can be built from code, connectivity, and the courage to think differently.
