Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) resumes the development of residences for Civil Servants (ASN), including homes for government employees and the military/police forces, in the New Capital after the Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2024. Various development targets for residential areas, including apartment complexes (Rusun) and Ministerial Residence Plots (RTJM), alongside essential infrastructure, are expected to be swiftly completed and operational ahead of the 79th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day in August 2024.
In a press release on Monday (22/4/2024), Director-General of Housing at the Ministry of PUPR, Iwan Suprijanto, stated, “Following the long Eid al-Fitr holiday, the construction of residences in the New Capital has resumed. Construction workers have returned to the field to complete various infrastructure and housing projects in the New Capital.”
Suprijanto emphasized his periodic visits to the New Capital for monitoring and evaluating the progress of housing development in the burgeoning city. He highlighted the hope that the recent extended holiday would invigorate construction workers and Ministry of PUPR personnel stationed in the New Capital, motivating them to achieve the significant targets set for this project.
The residential units already constructed in the New Capital encompass several types. Firstly, there are the Phase I Worker Housing (HPK) units consisting of 22 four-story towers capable of accommodating around 10,700 workers. Secondly, there are the Ministerial Residence Plots (RTJM), with progress currently at 80%. Some of these residences have already been furnished, while the remaining units are undergoing final finishing touches.
Moreover, the construction of 47 towers for Civil Servants and military/police personnel in the form of apartment complexes (Rusun) is underway. These vertical structures comprise two podium floors for public and social facilities and 10 residential floors. It is hoped that 12 of these towers will be completed and operational in the coming months.
“We have already completed and fully occupied the Worker Housing (HPK) units, which are managed and utilized by skilled workers involved in the development of the New Capital,” stated Suprijanto. “As for the Ministerial Residence Plots (RTJM), those already completed serve as examples of hope and optimism that the development of the New Capital is progressing. Alongside the completion of apartment complexes for the relocation of Civil Servants and military/police personnel to support the celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day,” he added.
Previously, the Nusantara Capital Region Authority (IKN) had signed a cooperation agreement with the Federal District Government of Brasília, Brazil. This collaboration aims to facilitate knowledge exchange and cooperation between the two new capital cities.
Bambang Susantono, Head of the IKN Authority, stated, “As the new capital of Brazil, Brasília has experience in addressing various challenges in creating a new economic and political center within the country. These experiences can serve as valuable lessons for the development of the New Capital.”
During the meeting, agreements were reached for closer and more concrete cooperation between the two cities. Governor of Brasília, Ibaneis Rocha, shared his experiences in building Brasília. In addition to urban development, both parties agreed to collaborate on the development of smart cities, green initiatives, infrastructure development, resilient and inclusive community building, as well as climate mitigation and urban planning.
A delegation from the IKN Authority visited Brasília to engage in various activities with the Brazilian government. These activities included studying the history of Brasília’s relocation and urban planning, as well as addressing challenges in managing urban development, including urban settlement and transportation.
The delegation also met with academics, including those from the University of Brasília, to gain additional perspectives on building new cities. This visit coincided with Brazil’s celebration of 64 years since the relocation of its capital from Rio de Janeiro to Brasília in April 1960. The six-decade journey of Brasília’s development is considered to have generated valuable knowledge that can serve as a valuable lesson for the development of the New Capital.
This collaboration aligns with the increasing bilateral relations between Indonesia and Brazil, with Brazil hosting the G20 Summit this year. Paco Britto, Secretary-General of International Relations of Brasília, expressed Brasília’s readiness to support the development of the New Capital. “For Brasília, this cooperation is crucial as our government is currently pushing for the revitalization of Brasília at its 64th anniversary,” he said. “Therefore, the two city governments can exchange experiences and together build two monumental cities, while addressing contemporary urban challenges,” he added.
