Singapore – A remarkable circle of colour has taken over the Supertree Grove Lawn at Gardens by the Bay. For the first time, the globally celebrated United Buddy Bears exhibition has arrived in Singapore, presenting 150 towering bear sculptures, each two metres tall and hand-painted with striking individuality.
Hailing from Berlin, this travelling showcase has been touring the world since 2002. Now, its Singapore debut brings together an extraordinary gathering of artistry and symbolism, all crafted from fibreglass and carefully arranged in an elegant formation beneath the Supertrees.
At the heart of this exhibition lies a profound message. Each bear, painted by artists from different countries, stands as a symbol of peace, tolerance, and global understanding. One hundred and forty-five of the figures represent nations from across the world, celebrating cultural diversity through vivid designs and storytelling brushstrokes.
The Singapore bear, standing proudly among its peers, carries red and white hues echoing the national flag. Its surface is adorned with motifs of orchids, henna patterns, and lotus blooms, embodying the multicultural heritage of the nation while honouring the values of unity and respect.
Visitors are invited to embark on a journey across continents simply by walking through the circle of bears. Each sculpture offers a glimpse into its country’s unique identity, weaving together a colourful panorama of humanity that transcends borders.
In addition to the national bears, five special figures represent universal values. Two golden bears symbolise the Golden Rule and Global Ethic, inseparable in their stance. Alongside them, Human Rights, Respect for All Life, and the Einstein bear—dedicated to the legacy of Albert Einstein—convey timeless ideals that resonate deeply in today’s world.
The United Buddy Bears exhibition is more than an artistic display; it is a cultural dialogue that unites nations and values through creativity. In the vibrant setting of Gardens by the Bay, the message of peace and solidarity finds a fitting stage, offering both locals and international visitors a powerful visual experience.
For Singapore, hosting the United Buddy Bears is both a celebration of art and a reminder of the enduring importance of harmony between people and nations. It is a rare opportunity to stand amidst global symbols of unity, right at the heart of the city.
