President Jokowi Endorses Jakarta Special Region Bill

In a significant legislative move, President Joko Widodo has signed off on the enactment of Law Number 2 of 2024 concerning the Jakarta Special Region (JSR). This multifaceted legislation not only delineates the parameters of Jakarta’s special status but also addresses the pivotal transition of the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara.

The JSR Law, ceremoniously signed by President Joko Widodo in Jakarta on April 25, 2024, and promulgated on the same day by Minister of State Secretariat Pratikno, embodies a strategic vision for the future governance and economic vitality of Indonesia.

A detailed examination of the official document available on the State Secretariat’s website reveals the nuanced provisions encapsulated within. Article 1, Paragraph 1 defines the Jakarta Special Region Province as a jurisdiction endowed with distinct characteristics in governance within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.

Furthermore, Article 1, Paragraph 2 elaborates on the specialized authorities vested in the Jakarta Special Region Province, particularly its role as the National Economic Center and a Global City. This delineation underscores Jakarta’s pivotal role in driving Indonesia’s economic growth and global connectivity.

Of particular note is the transitional phase regarding the capital’s relocation from Jakarta to Nusantara, as stipulated in Article 63. It clarifies that upon the enactment of the JSR Law, Jakarta will continue to function as the capital of the Republic of Indonesia until the President’s decision regarding the transfer of the capital to Nusantara is formalized, in accordance with existing legal frameworks.

Moreover, Article 66 outlines measures to facilitate the gradual transition of the capital, ensuring the seamless continuation of governmental affairs and the establishment of state institutions and organizations in Jakarta. This phased approach, delineated in Presidential Regulations, aims to mitigate disruptions while optimizing the efficiency of the relocation process. Overall, the enactment of the Jakarta Special Region Law signifies a watershed moment in Indonesia’s administrative landscape, embodying a forward-looking strategy to empower Jakarta’s global stature while orchestrating a methodical transition of the capital to Nusantara.
