Jonie Yap relocated to Jakarta at the age of seven, growing up in severe poverty. His family’s rented home lacked ceramic tiles, and they shared a communal well with neighbors. Jonie’s father worked at a garment factory, while his mother ran a catering business. This challenging environment meant frequent moves between rental homes until they eventually managed to purchase a small house in Jelambar after years of perseverance.
During his teenage years, Jonie took on significant responsibilities. While attending high school, he assisted his parents with their gas store, making deliveries by bicycle. To supplement their income, Jonie and his siblings provided private tutoring for elementary students and worked at night writing lottery tickets.
Entrepreneurial Beginnings
After completing his college education, Jonie and his siblings ventured into the cosmetic industry by opening a shop in Asemka. They quickly noticed the high demand for foreign products, even those lacking BPOM certification. This discovery motivated them to learn the art of soap making. With self-taught knowledge and their mother’s determination to find the perfect formula, they successfully created transparent soap and Papaya Soap in 1999, founding CV Sukses Jaya Abadi.
