The issue came to light after Connor Hayes, Meta’s vice president for generative AI, shared the company’s vision in an interview with the Financial Times. Hayes described a future where AI-powered accounts could exist alongside human users, seamlessly blending into platforms like Facebook and Instagram. These accounts, he explained, would be capable of creating and sharing AI-generated content, complete with personal details and visual elements. “They’ll have bios and profile pictures and be able to generate and share content powered by AI on the platform,” Hayes said, outlining Meta’s ambitious plans for integrating artificial intelligence.

Instead, the account disclosed that it was built by a team comprising predominantly white men, sparking accusations of cultural appropriation and exploitation.
Liv’s posts, which included snapshots of “children” playing on a beach and holiday-themed baked goods, were marked with a small watermark identifying them as AI-generated. Despite this transparency, critics argued that the accounts blurred the lines between reality and fiction, raising ethical concerns about the use of AI to simulate deeply personal narratives.
The controversy reached a tipping point as media outlets began investigating the broader implications of Meta’s AI experiments. By the end of the week, Meta had started deleting posts and accounts linked to the experiment.
