Tel Aviv – In a move described as a gesture of goodwill, Hamas released Edan Alexander, a dual citizen of the United States and Israel, during a temporary pause in fighting across Gaza on Monday (May 12). Alexander had been held in captivity for 19 months, and his release marks a rare breakthrough in the long-standing conflict.
The Israeli military confirmed the reception of Alexander from representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which facilitated the secure transfer. According to Israeli Channel 12, Alexander’s condition was described as “poor” upon his release.
Despite this development, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that there will be no broader ceasefire agreement or mass hostage release at this stage. The pause in military activity, Netanyahu asserted, was solely to facilitate Alexander’s transfer.
The release came shortly after former US President Donald Trump announced the news on social media, celebrating the breakthrough. “Edan Alexander, the American hostage presumed dead, will be released by Hamas. Great news!” he wrote in a capitalized post.
Hamas stated that Alexander’s release was intended as a sign of goodwill toward Trump, who is visiting the Middle East this week. Netanyahu credited the release to sustained military pressure in Gaza and diplomatic efforts led by Trump.
The Israeli leader confirmed he spoke directly with Trump on the same day, highlighting their ongoing political coordination and Trump’s stated commitment to Israel.
